Walcker organ - St. Maria

Eberhard Friedrich Walcker from Ludwigsburg built the organ in 1844 as his Opus 46. The pedal stops are mounted on slider chests, while those of the first and second manuals are on cone chests, a design further developed by Walcker. He specifically designed the third manual for the Physharmonica, a harmonium stop capable of modulation "from the faintest whisper to a very noticeable volume," housed in the console. The second manual features, among other stops, a free-reed clarinet and the delicate string stops Dolce (metal) and Harmonica (wood). The Flute travers on the first manual is turned from wood "like natural flutes," and all mixtures include a third stop. The 10 2/3' Quintbass can produce a "32 foot tone," which "gives the whole a rather majestic effect." He provided five large wedge bellows for the wind supply.

While Walcker's fellow organ builders largely conceived their instruments in the Baroque spirit, he opened the door to Romanticism with his innovative approach to stop-setting and voicing. Walcker's ideals, that the stops "should be used individually to present a melody, yet together offer a rich variety of character" and that the organ's tone should possess a "grand and sacred character", can be studied on the Schramberg instrument. After two modifications in 1900 (pneumatic conversion) and 1948 (enhancement of the sound), the organ was restored to its original condition in 1995 by the organ building firm Th. Kuhn AG, Männedorf/ Zürich. The instrument, with 36 stops, is today the oldest surviving large cone-valve organ by Eberhard Friedrich Walcker.
