Heilig Geist
Evangelischen Stadtkirche
Hl. Geist
The church Heilig Geist is one of the major church buildings designed by the Stuttgart architect Josef Cades (1855-1943). A student of Joseph von Egles (1819-1899), he initially worked in the archiepiscopal building office in Freiburg from 1883. From 1887, he designed 39 churches in the diocese of Rottenburg on behalf of the diocese. Significant works by him survive in Stuttgart: St. Elisabeth (1901); Hundersingen (1906, still in its original state); and Bad Cannstatt: Liebfrauen (1909). In Heilig Geist church, Cades skillfully combined neo-romanesque and neo-gothic elements to create a significant sacred building of historicism. Following renovations in 1962 and 1993, the church presents itself today as a listed building from the first half of the 20th century. Of particular note are the chancel design by Michael Münzer of Stuttgart, with its altar, ambo, large chancel cross, and three apse panels; the chancel windows by Wilhelm Geyer (1900-1968) of Ulm; the pulpit by the Schramberg sculptor Cajetan Schaub (1864-1943); and the Stations of the Cross by the Ulm painter Alfred Vollmar. The large, bright church interior, with its simple design, leaves a profound impression upon visitors. Every year at Christmas time, an early and a late work from the Schramberg School are on display: the Nativity scene created in 1946 by Max Scheller and Georg Kaiser, and the triptych "Departure-Adoration-Flight," created by Eugen Mey between 1982 and 1990.
